Gold work on kimono “Ou” c. 2002 #17 in exhibit – At least four types of thread. Bricked and sometimes top outlined. Thin and thick bands, gold and silver. Kimono colors gold and violet tones. Shibori crimps the fabric horizontally and vertically. Sometimes uses softer threads crosshatched for different effect.
Silver metallic and silk used for snow on Mt. Fuji on “Ohn” c. 2000 #1 in exhibit.
The colors are deeply layered. Greens and blued and browns are especially rich. Creams are mellow with hints of color, a blush of blue. The raised shibori texture heightens the effect. Plain silk embroidery adds shine very subtly. Especially effective on “Gensou” c. 1987 #9 in exhibit. Water ripples in diagonal stripes.
“Tenshou” #27 is richly textures and has simple gold work in pine bark lozenge motif. The chirimen effect is multiplied exponentially.
Idea: sashiko stitch rows, then shrink wash fabric, then over-stitch. See museum book for details. Like waves on the lake here. Layers of motion going in different directions. Go for dimensionality.
Stitch pine tree? Gnarled branches, long, fine, straight needles. Contrast.
